Is Painful Swelling In The Thumb Knuckle Due To Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Hello, For the past month 1/2, My 8 year old s thumb is swollen at the joint area. It s the only part of her hand that is swollen and hurts when she bends it. X-ray came back normal, no broken bones, MRI appeared to be fine as well. We recently got a series of blood test done and are waiting for results. During the same time frame, she complained of her heel hurting- it hurts the most in the morning. The pain did go away after two weeks. What do you think it could be since it s localized inflammation that haven t changed. Is it possible that it could be Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis? Just looking for answer...

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Such localized pain &swelling along with pain in heal is likely to be low serum calcium or vitamin D levels. It can also be due to traumatic/over use joint swelling. She needs estimation of serum calcium, vitamin D level & R factor in her blood, which must have been in process. Once you get the readings &find the cause of problem. She would get specific treatment for the cause &would be free of the suffering. Please consult an orthopedic surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
