Is Pain And Limp In Walk Normal After Being On Cast For Fracture?

I recently broke my right ankle in 2 places. No surgery, pins or plates required. I was in the cast for approx 3 months (fibreglass cast for first 3-4 wks, NWB aircast for next 6wks, walking on it with aircast for last 2 weeks). I am now cast-free, but have been experiencing a lot of pain in the outside of my right foot when walking causing me to walk with a limp. Is this a normal problem after not walking on it for a few months? I expected some discomfort, but this seems like a little much...

Hi,

If the fracture has healed appropriately, the limp might be caused due to the muscle atrophy. Physiotherapy is the way to go.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gonzalo Escobar, Orthopedic Surgeon
