My brother had aorta valve replacement, a bypass and a clamp put on his mitral valve 9 days ago. It has been a ver rocky road. Doctor had to put pacemaker in 3 days after surgery. Right side of heart not functioning very good and med they give him for that is affecting his liver. He is very jaundice and does not respond to commands, not talking . Is this normal?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sorry to hear of his sufferings. In fact valvular surgery is always complex, however after a successful surgery, without complication, the patient should be conscious the next day. As you have already mentioned, his case seems to be a bit complicated and things are not that fine. Jaundice and no response at day 9 (without any sedation drugs) does not appear to be normal. His story appear a bit alarming. But lets hope he gets well in sometime. Things may get better in sometime.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
