Is Nausea And Headache Related To Withdrawal Of Atenolol?

I am 60 years old. I have lost 85 pounds in over 4 1/2 years. As a result, one of the medications I have been taken off of is atenolol as my BP has been normal. I went for my gynecologist check up and the BP was randomly 150/90! What s up with that? I have also since then been feeling nauseous, shaky and have had periodic headaches. Is it related? My doctor is presently on vacation until next week but I have to say I have been nervous as to why the sudden symptoms.

Hi,

First of all, you should not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin while you take atenolol, because Aspirin diminishes the effectiveness of atenolol as anti-hypertensive drug. Second, the hormonal therapy for contraception or replacement therapy can aggravate hypertension. Third, you should do some investigations such as: Lipid profile. Fourth, anti-hypertensive drug cannot control the high blood pressure alone, you should decrease salt and fat intake besides taking the drug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mustafa, Neurologist
