Is Loss Of Hearing In Right Ear After Epidural Procedure A Concern?

I had an epidural before my Hartman reversal surgery.as the anesthetist was inserting the needle in my spine I felt an immediate stabbing pain at the base of my head.and my right leg was jumping up and down uncontrollably She explained to me thatshe had to reposition the spinal needle. Two days after my surgery I woke up experiencing total loss of hearing in my right ear and extreme echoing From my left ear. The nursing staff became concerned and had the same aneasthetetist check out my problem . She insisted that an epidural never causes this problem. I am very thankful that I am on the road to total recovery. I hope that my bad experience with the epidural can be a learning tool ffor today s medecne. What are your thoughts about my expertence? Thank uou, Jessie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. In addition to blocking the nerves which carry pain, local anaesthetic drugs in the epidural space will block other types of nerves as well, in a dose-dependent manner. Depending on the drug and dose used, the effects may last only a few minutes or up to several hours. Bupivacaine is markedly toxic if inadvertently given, may cause excitation, nervousness, tingling around the mouth, tinnitus, tremor, dizziness, blurred vision, or seizures, followed by depression: drowsiness, loss of consciousness, respiratory depression and apnea.

Hence i doubt if the anesthesia was given in an overdose in you, which might have caused the problem.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
