Is Long Term Intake Of Prednisone Safe For Rheumatoid Arthritis?

I m 44 with severe rheumatoid arthritis. I m currently on actemra infusions and recently started methatrexate but I ended up with toxicity so dropped the methatrexate. I can barely move in the mornings and the pain is at times unbearable. One week again I started taking prednisone and I m taking 5mg morning and 5 mg at night. No change as yet. Is there any sort of pain management that could help me and what do you think about the prednisone and what is a long term safe dose? Regards Vicki

Hello and thanks you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein and I will try to help you as much as I can with my answer.

Prednisone is a steroid and each steroid has its side effects such as weight gain, osteoporosis, low immune system. These are more or less pronounced in people and depend on dosage and period of use. Generally, prednisone is more efficient than metitrexatr and less toxic but if you start it,it should be in low dosage.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
