Is It Safe To Withdraw From Eliquis And Take Aspirin While Suffering From Complete Carotid Artery Occlusion?

Hello...I m 55 years old and my left carotid artery is 100% occlusion. I had a stroke 6 months ago and am meeting with my Doctor next week. They stated that they don t recommend surgery and may take me off the blood thinner Eliquis and put me on an aspirin regiment...this concerns me. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would agree with your doctor on the fact that there is no need for surgery or Eliquis.

You should know that the total carotid artery occlusion is usually related to atherosclerosis.

Eliquis is a blood thinner, used to prevent stroke from a cardiac disorder like arrhythmia.

For this reason, Aspirin is a better choice for stroke prevention, coupled with a good control of your arterial hypertension and blood lipid profile.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best.
