Is It Safe To Take Coumadin If Having ITP?

My Mother just had open heart surgery 5 days again. She is suffering from afib the last two days. The Dr wants to put her on Coumadin as well as the lovenox. I am really afraid of the Coumadin use because of her ITP. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

hi,
welcome to HCM.
It all depends on the platelet counts. As AFib posses great risk of stroke, she was probably kept on coumadin. If the platelet counts are too low, the chances of bleeding with coumadin are high; if they are normal to mild low, lack of coumadin can make clots in the blood and can result in fatal stroke.
It is a tough decision to make; However, as your doctor does it under constant monitoring, i believe it is not going to be a problem.
Hope i am clear.
