Is It Safe To Take Ranitidine While On Pantoprazole For Pityriasis Rosea?

Have you heard of pityriasis rosea? We believe my husband has it. The itch is sometimes unbearable, let alone how it looks. Went to ER this morning because of the itch and burning sensation and he was prescribed Act-ranitidine 150mg twice daily. This is for stomach acid. Why would this be prescribed? He is already taking pantoprazole 40mg twice daily for Duodenitis which he contracted last month after having taken prednisone for this horrible rash (pityriasis) on his torso, back, arms and up his neck. Should he be taking the Act-ranitidine also. He has had this rash for over 2 months now. From what I've read there is no cure for this but is there anything else that can help with the discomfort. He is also taking Claritin. He is also taking warfarin for a heart valve. Please help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Madam,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.

Actually Ranitidine, as you also mentioned is a drug that inhibits stomach acid production. I do not know why your husband's treating doctor decided to prescribe it. In my opinion, Ranitidine has no beneficial effects on treating pityriasis rosea.

Regarding Pityriasis rosea, it generally goes away without treatment. It usually lasts about 8 to 10 weeks. As the rash itches, I would suggest your husband to use skin lotions and lubricants to soothe itching. If symptoms are severe, your local doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines such as corticosteroids to relieve itching and reduce the rash.

Hope I helped with my answer. Feel free to ask again.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
