Is It Safe To Take Narcotic To Treat Chronic Pain In Right Shoulder?

I am suffering chronic pain in my r-shoulder. I must ingest a narcotic called percocet 3-4 times daily. This medication only just makes the pain tolerable. Is the reason why the medication does not perform as well as it had in the past due to my body grown accustomed to the medication? Is there another medication perhaps that can be recommended? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Peter Moodie

Hello,

Chronic pain in the right shoulder is something that needs attention. The causes may be frozen shoulder as in diabetes, shoulder joint osteoarthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, rotator cuff tendinopathy, cervical radiculopathy or sub acromial bursitis. All these conditions require pain medication.

Percocet is a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen. It is a safe drug in relation with kidneys, meaning it doesn't have adverse effects on kidney. Percocet can be accustomed or the term used is tolerance. That's why your pain is not getting relieved as it was previously.

A few medications you can use but with caution are NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Aceclofenac can be used twice daily for 10 days only and only if you don't have any kidney malfunction, corticosteroids can be used when the pain is severe and Prednisolone 10mg daily once for 10 days then 5 mg for 5 days and then 2.5 mg alternate day for 5 days.

You can have a opioid alongside like Hydrocodone or Oxycodone. Physical therapy would help a lot. After relief of acute pain, please go for physical therapy where you can learn some stretching and muscle strengthening exercises that would help in pain relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You can use Tramadol with brand names Ultracet, Qdolo. This is to be taken 50mg per dose twice daily. It can be combined with acetaminophen for good pain relief. If the pain is severe and unbearable, you can use NSAIDs like Ibuprofen. To avoid gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg taken once daily before food.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
