Is It Safe To Take Levofloxacin For Elevated PSA Levels?

My doctor has prescribed 30 500mg levofloxacin tablets due to a high psa test result. I think he is trying to determine if the high reading is an infection. Then test again the PSA to check if the reading is PSA test reading is lower. I am 81 years old and in pretty good health. In reading about the side effects possible I am concerned. Is this a normal or reasonable plan?

Hi,

The high PSA may be due to prostatitis (inflammation of prostate) and that may be the reason why you have put on Ciprofloxacin.

If PSA is persistently high it is better to go for a prostate biopsy for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
