Is It Safe To Take Forteo In Prevailing Condition Of Osteoporosis?

my doctor wants to put me on Forteo and the side effects totally scare me...I have osteoprosis... I want not to take this drug. I got new supplements, I am now exercising, eating the right foods and drinking lots of water. I want to see how I do on my next bone denstity scan in August before I make any rash decisions.

Hi
Thanks for posting your query.
I appreciate your concern for the safety profile of Forteo.

Forteo (Teriparatide) is one of the most efficient drugs used in both men and postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who are at high risk for fractures.
The common side effects seen with the use of Forteo include:

Immediate side effects like nausea, joint aches, pain, leg cramps, and injection site pain, swelling and bruising.

Delayed side effects like a decrease in blood pressure when you change positions. This usually happens within 4 hours of taking and goes away within a few hours which can be minimised if you can sit or lie down right away if you get these symptoms.
It may also cause increased calcium causing vomiting, constipation, low energy, or muscle weakness.

Since your next bone density scan is due in August, you may continue your daily exercise, take healthy and balanced diet rich in vitamin D like milk, eggs, etc.

Hope this answers your query.

A feed back is appreciated.
