Is It Safe To Take ECP Treatment While Taking Birth Control Pills?

I took 3 bcontrol pills in one day to catch up with the days I missed after I had started my period, but I had unprotected sex. I have taken them everyday since but the day I took 3 was the day I had sex. A month prior to starting I had just got then Nexplanon implant removed after almost a year. Do you think Im covered? It s already been three days so I couldn t take a ECP could I?

Hi,

It is not safe to take ECP while on birth control pills. ECP is only intended to be a post-coital contraceptive, not a regular method of contraception.

Taking emergency contraceptive while on regular birth control pills amounts to increase hormone levels which may cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. It may also result in your next period being slightly different than usual.

Period may occur earlier or later than expected, it may be heavier or lighter than usual.

If you have started taking the regular birth control pills on the first day of your period (day one of your menstrual cycle) you will be protected from pregnancy straight away.

If you have started the regular birth control pills on the fifth day of your period or before, you will still be protected from pregnancy straight away, unless you have a short menstrual cycle (your period is every 23 days or less).

If you have a short menstrual cycle, you need to take the pill for seven days to be protected.

If you have started the pills on any other day of your cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy straight away.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
