Is It Safe To Switch From Miralax To Amitase?

I was diag with tortuouss colon 4 years ago and and have been taking a single dose of miralax in the am. I went to a new GI where I have relocated and was told to start amitase 8mg bid starting tomorrow. My question is why should I stop Miralax and introduce a new routine?

Hi,

The choice of laxative may be different for different individuals and one may be effective for one, whereas some other laxative may be effective for other patient. Each laxative has its beneficial effects and also side effects.

However, with due regards to your doctor, if Miralax was working for you, I do not think ,that there was a need for your switching over to Amitiza. Amitiza is a prescription drug and more costly than the OTC drug Miralax. Also, nauseating side effect is very frequently seen in about 25-30 % of patients taking Amitiza, whereas this side effect is very less (3-5 %) with Miralax.

Still, final decision should be made by your doctor, as he is in a better position to advise you, after analyzing all the benefits vs risks situation.
