Is It Safe To Stop Metoprolol To Determine Recurrence Of Palpitations?

I am 67 years old and never had high blood pressue. Then all of a sudden I got high blood pressure. I had paplitations and a fast heart beat and my doctor put me on Met0prolol.My orginal doctor moved and I have been going to this doctor for 6 months. He was well recommended. Then I went to my gynocolgist a week laaterand he took my blood pressure and it was 170 over 86. He put me on Lisinopril and said I could take both but to get checked in a week with my primary dr. I did and my pressure was 120over 80 and heart rate 88 which is good. Then my primary said to stop taking the metroprolol and see if my paplitations come back and if they do go back to taking metroprolo. Does this sound okay

Hello welcome to HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns. Palpitations can occur due to anxiety, Longterm gas problems, due to high blood pressure, but it can also occur in some heart conditions called arrhythmias(altered rhythm of heart) and some valvular heart diseases.
So, my advice to you is -

1. First confirm that your palpitations are not due to some heart conditions. For that ask your doctor to do HOLTER STUDY (24 HRS ECG MONITORING) and 2D ECHO STUDY(SONOGRAPHY OF HEART). This 2 studies are confirmatory enough to rule out any serious conditions. If any heart condition is found than metoprolol should not be stopped immediately at least.

2 . Even if no serious heart conditions are there you should not stop metoprolol abruptly. Decrease the dose of metoprolol gradually over 15 days. Otherwise chances of palpitations will be high.

Thank you.
Have a nice day.
