Is It Safe To Fly Immediately After Myringotomy?

Hi, I just had an ENT perform a myringotomy a few hours ago and I m supposed to travel via plane in the morning. My ear still hurts even though the pressure has reduced but I m nervous because i know the ear is infected -- I just don t have the results yet to know if it s bacterial or viral. Last thing I want is for the condition to worsen because of air travel. Do you think it will be safe to fly?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern.
It is not safe to fly immediately after myringotomy as it cause change in pressor and damage the ear drum.

You should take following advice:
Take acetomanaphan for pain
Keep the ear clean, do not get entry of water into the ear as it increased the chance of infection.
Use ear drop and antibiotics provided by doctor
Avoid nasal blow out and valsalva maneuver
Avoid swimming
Follow up regularly every 4-6 week following surgery to know progress,

You should consult the doctor if you have:
Hearing loss
Vertigo
Dizziness
fever
Discharge and bleeding from ear.

Hope this may help you
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
