My son was 1 year 2 months old(height 72cm and weight 8.4 kg) when we checked for thyroid and TSH was 5.85 and t3 and t4 are normal.doctor prescribed thyronorm 25 mcg. We checked the thyroid after 3 months and TSH was 0.7 and doctor asked as to continue the same dosage. Now he is 1 year 9 months old (height 79cm weight 9.4 kg). Can we stop the tablet? Kindly advice us. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query the and understand the concerns.

Considering your sons reading of TSH value (0.7) you may decrease the dose to 25 mcg every alternative day as per advice from our treating doctor and get thyroid tests (TSH) again after 1 month.

Means, no need to stop this medications at right now.

As it may be possible this dosage have caused excess thyroid hormones in the blood leading to sudden fall in Serum TSH value although 0.7 value is not low but it is towards low normal. (Normal value of TSH 0.5 to 4.0 miu/l).

One more thing it might require some time to stabilize the exact dosage initially but once the dosage will be set then there will be no issue with elevation of thyroid hormones. So no need to worry.

Continue his thyroid treatment with regular follow-up at your treating physician and if possible check your thyroid profile on every alternative months at initial stages.

And when the dosage will be set you can go for testing every 3 to 6 monthly.

Also, thyroid tablet (Thyronorm) must be taken on empty stomach to get maximum absorption from the stomach as food might interfere with its absorption.

Hope this detailed answer will be helpful.

Regards,
