Is It Possible To Have Both Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis And Osteopenia?

Is it possible to have both DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis) and Osteopenia? I am a 58 yo female who is two years postmenopausal. I was told I have mild osteopenia and to do wt bearing exercise and take calcium supplements. Can one have low bone density as well as DISH? Can you loose bone mass and still be a bone former? Now wondering if I ve been misdiagnosed. I was diagnosed with DISH by a Rheumatologists (and a second one who agreed based on my records). The diagnosis was made mainly on extraspinal manifestations (hallux rigidus, lateral epicondylitis, bilateral whiskering osteophytes on iliac crests, retrocalcaneal heel spurs, and DDD (degenerative disc disease). I also have osteoarthritis in my shoulders, spine, and hands. I had a 2-level c-spine fusion for herniated discs 15 yrs ago. I was first told I had fibromyalgia 17 yrs ago when my chronic pain first started. P.S. I also forgot to mention prior to my DEXA scan that I had had a ASIS bone harvest done on my left hip when I had my c-spine fusion. This is the hip that was scanned. Could this have affected the results of the DEXA scan? Thanks so much! Thank you for your response.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As treatment to dish and other mention manifestation are almost the same, analgesic sedation and anti-inflammatory, physical therapy is useful in all cases. As you might be on muscle relaxants already, blood calcium and vitamin D levels are useful. Join spine care yoga art of living course, I saw few patients with similar history got much benefited along with medicines and an orthopedist's opinion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
