Is It Normal To Refer To Hematology/oncology For Blood Clots In Lung?

HI just inquiring if it is routine to be referred to a specialist of Hematology/Oncology after you have had been diagnosed with blood clots in the lung - yes he was a smoker - has stopped but I am concerned ? Is Oncology normally also part of the hematology specialty

Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Blood clots in lung is known as pulmonary embolism (PE ).
Causes for pulmonary embolism are many.
Following are the common causes for PE.
1. Blood disorder(coagulation disease)
2. Smoking
3. Cancer
4. DVT (deep venous thrombosis) of calf veins.
5. Prolonged immobilisation etc.
So in the work up of pulmonary embolism, we need to rule out coagulation disorders and cancer first.
So haematologist is referred. And oncology and haematology are two different branches.
Involvement of both is needed in PE.
