Is Glaucoma Surgery Advisable For A Bed Ridden Dementia Patient?

My father is a dementia patient & was being hospitalised for almost one and half month for fever treatment. During this hospitalisation he developed angular glaucoma but due to other existing disease conditions as mentioned we were unable to treat his glaucoma. Its almost a month he is carrying glaucoma for which he is being treated with eye drops. Now we are planning for his glaucoma surgery however we are bit concerned that since he is being bed ridden & also a bit restless (due to dementia) whether he can be operated for glaucoma. Also whether he can undergo operation by administering anaesthesia since his conscious level is always fluctuating. Please advise.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Need of surgery in a bed ridden patient with dementia has to be evaluated in terms of possible advantages and disadvantages of proceeding or avoiding the surgery of angular glaucoma.

If the surgery is most mandatory, discuss the scope of regional anesthesia as local drops or else for avoiding systemic side effects of inhalation or intravenous anesthetic medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
