Is Discontinuing Amitriptyline For Peripheral Neuropathy Advisable In The Elderly?
I have diagnosed peripheral neuropathy and have been on amitriptyline for several years with no noticeable remedy/help/relief just take the pill once a day. Now my new insurance (Humana/Medicare contract health coverage) want cover this prescription - they tell me risk - I m 80. Would you recommend or support my discontinuation of the pill?

Hi,
You can discontinue the drug and switch to other drugs for neuropathic pain. Drugs that are covered in insurance can be selected. Pregabalin is also useful in neuropathic pain. Pregabalin with vitamin B12 is also available which can be started after ruling out any contraindications for the drug.
