Is Depression Due To Overuse Of Medicines Related To Nerves?

I am concerned about a brother with multiple mental health issues. I believe he has eating disorder. He has panic attacks. He runs away from home people and situations. He claims he is homeless and broke though he is not. He makes poor decisions. Although he was married for over 30 years to a woman he now says he is gay and dates men. Despite acceptance from family he will then get angry and say he is not gay. He was once a very social person involved in many activities now he has no interest in anything. He has divorced his wife and left his job. He has converted from Catholicism to ?Judaism. He has seen a psychiatrist in the past. He has in my humble opinion overused drugs he said he takes for nerves and depression. He has stay with numerous relatives for days at a time but always leaves in the middle of the night. How can we his family help him?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Depression by itself can cause drug abuse, and the drugs can also contribute to worsening depression. Since the depression affects his life adversely, you need to seek care from a psychiatrist, who can do an evaluation of his mental health and initiate appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
