Is Contraceptives Needed Despite On Mirena IUD After Having Unsafe Sex?

I had a mirena iud implanted on Monday Oct 23rd on the 8th day of my cycle. My barrier method of contraception (condom) broke during sexual intercourse Tuesday Oct 24th and I am very concerned. Will I need to take emergency contraception? Or will the mirena release enough hormone in the next few days to prevent implantation into the uterus?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Birth control IUD would start offering protection completely by a week time after it has been inserted. Hence it is advisable to use barrier methods like condoms and spermicide agents for a week or ten days after its insertion.
In your case, since it second day after insertion and you are stating that condom used was broken, it carries a risk for getting pregnant. Hence, it would be better for you to take emergency contraceptive pill to prevent the accidental pregnancy.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
