Is Colonoscopy Effective In Determining Cause Of Chronic Diarrhoea?
I am writing bout my sister....she has rapid weight loss in the past few weeks...her appetite hasn t changed..about 3 weeks ago she started having diarrehea...she saw her internest here in MT and he told her to use ammodiam and then Metamucil....no change...She needs a lot of sleep each night...She has had a gall bladder test, an endoscopy, and I can t remember what other tests...she had a stool sample, but the results aren t back yet. Right now she is in Phoenix and went to the ER yesterday at one of the mayo clinics...The doctor did another stool sample and hydrated her since she s had diarrhea for so long...he gave her antibiotics because he s suspicious she might have a bacteria in her lower intestine/colon...and told her to take pepto bismal tablets to help with binding her up.....I don t know why the internest in GF didn t order a colonoscopy on her months ago....In a few days she and her husband will be leaving for Puerta Nuevo and will be back in Phoenix in Feb....She has an appointment on 2/4/2015 at the Mayo Clinic....
Hi, She is suffering from acute diarrhea and not chronic. She should have undergone routine blood, electrolytes, urea, creatinine and stool (R/ M and ova)examinations. She should be given antibiotics with anaerobic bacteria coverage ( quinolones with ornidazole) with antispasmodic, water and electrolyte replacements, with probiotics like lactobaccillus, racecadotril etc. If above investigations doesn't give clue then we can go for colonoscopy but its not necessary.
