Is Belligerent And Unreasonable Behavior Due To Alcohol Consumption Or Bipolar Disorder?

I was at a social gathering with a longtime friend who we (family and friends) had for quite some time suspected of being Bipolar in some way (readers digest diagnosis, mood swings, etc!!), then over a period of less than one hour she became belligerent and unreasonable. Seemed to coincide with the 2nd or 3rd alcoholic beverage. Is this Bipolar disorder or alcohol? Do they coexist? She had been through rehab re alcohol but seemed to be ok for last couple of years. So question is: with bipolar disorder/alcohol, which is the chicken and which is the egg? This was a drastic, fast personality change, i.e. Jekyl/Hide. What should she seek treatment for?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses can lead to alcohol abuse. The abuse, in turn, can worsen the presenting symptoms of this mental illness so it can go both ways.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
