Is A Vaginal Discharge After Childbirth Normal?

I had a baby 5 months ago and I am exclusively nursing. I have not had a normal period yet, but i have brown bloody discharge every 5-6 weeks. Not enough to constitute a period but enough to have to wear a tampon for a day or so. I am taking the mini pill as well. Is this normal?

Thank you for consulting in HealthCareMagic. I understand your concern but let me reassure that lactational amenorrhoea is an absolutely normal physiological condition wherein the suckling of the infant provides a stimulus that prevents the hormonal surge which otherwise gives rise to ovulation and since that does not happen, the periods do not occur as well. So breast feeding acts as a natural contraceptive and may continue till you continue nursing your baby. You might have some amount of discharge in between and there is nothing to worry about it. You may or may not take the mini pills at the moment although relying on lactational amenorrhoea as a method of preventing pregnancy is not fool proof.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on HealthCareMagic are welcome. Wish you and your kid good health.
