Is A Bulge In Lower Groin Area Suggestive Of Inguinal Hernia?

Hi, I have been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia - I have a bulge in my lower groin. I sometimes have the feeling of gas or pressure in my groin area and lower abdomen. Sometimes though I get a gurgling sensation in the area of the lump and I wonder is this kind of sensation related to the hernia as well? It is a sensation I would describe as being similar to when I would have a diarea problem from a bacteria or virus infection when my intestines would have that funny gassy gurglly sound like liquid is running through a pipe type of thing. I m wondering if this is something I should be concerned about or is it a side effect of the hernia and the impact it is having on my intestines? I went to my doctor last night and didn t mention this because it doesn t happen often and it was not bothering me yesterday nor has it felt this way recently. I have had this condition for about 3 weeks now and I am scheduled to see a surgeon on February 18th 2016. What are your thoughts please? Tom

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Tom! A swelling in the lower inguinal area with your description does sound like a hernia. Here are a few things that will help you ascertain -
1) The hernial swelling increases with cough which you can feel when you cough or strain.
2) it can be pushed back inside the abdomen with pressure.
3) if the hernia contains intestines you may be able to feel the peristaltic movements through it.
If the first 2 are present it is more likely to be a hernia.
It's better to consult a surgeon at the earliest.
Also report to the emergency if you start having excessive pain or you notice the skin over the hernial sac changing color or goes blackish.
