I read your question and I understand your concern about your son.

Both Carbamazepine (Tegretol) and Valproic acid (Volprin Chrono)are widely used drugs in the treatment of many types of seizures. The choice depends on seizure type and side effects.
If I had to blindly pick one of them then I would pick Valproic acid as it is effective in almost all types of seizures, you could rarely go wrong with it. However whether one of those two or another drug (there are many other anti-epileptics) as I said depends on the seizure type.
Also it depends on how well controlled your son's seizures currently are with Tegretol, if it's preventing seizures then no reason to switch, otherwise another drug should be tried.
As to your last question of whether there is a way to stop taking medicine, epilepsy at times is a lifelong condition. There are cases when people become free of seizures in adulthood and treatment is interrupted but that is considered only when one is free of seizures for at least 2-5 years and weaning is done gradually.

I hope to have been of help.
