Is Synthroid Or Levothyroxine Better For Hyperthyroidism?

Greetings; I Recently had my thyroid removed (2) months ago at Loyola Hospital in the Chicagoland area, due to (4) large goiters. Im 49 years old and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2004. I m currently taking synthoid 88mcg, I ve been taking it for a week now and it is making me ill. I have every side effect there is including massive hair loss, fatigue, horrible hot flashes. Is this a case of my meds being a bit too strong? I do not feel like myself, I have weaken bones and I don t sleep well. I was on Levo prior to taking this one and I felt awful I had many side effects but ask my doctor to prescribe the name brand synthoid which I assumed will be much better for me. However, I don t feel any better, actually I feel worse than when I was on the Levo. What should I do? I take vitamin supplements daily such as calcium, b12, multivitamin, & flax seed but I still feel horrible. Is synthoid stronger than Levo. What do you recommend? Should I ask my a Endo to lower the dose? How long will it take to regulate my system and find the proper dose for me? I need help some kind if alternative. I can t live with these side effects fir the remainder of my life. I want my old self back again. Please help! Thank you, Ceola Page

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There are definite issues with the underlying thyroid and other steroid hormone levels secondary to primary disorder.

It is not the matter of the molecule choice in between company, but the balance has to be maintained between the needed dose and prescription as per the current status of free T 3 and free T 4 with TSH level of the blood.

Kindly revert back with latest lab reports available with you and I will guide in best possible manner ahead.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
