Is STD Test Showing HSV IGm Combination Positive At 1.61 A Cause For Concern?

Hello, I had asked for a full std panel to be done and everything came back negative other than hsv igm combination positive at 1.61. My doc said to not worry, it meant I had hsv1 and most people had it anyway. She said to forget about this result. I had no symptoms at the time, nor before or since. Is she right to say not to worry? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In my opinion, a level of 1.61 of combined HSV1/2 Igm antibody is definitely higher than the maximum normal level of 1.10. Therefore, it shows a current or recent infection with HSV (type 1 or 2 or mixed). Hence in my opinion, a treatment for HSV infection is mandatory in this case. Even if the patient is asymptomatic, it is needed to prevent its spread to the other partner.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
