Is Prednisone Only Solution For Persistent Sore Throat?

Hello! My daughter is away at college for the first time. About two weeks ago, she woke up with a horribly sore throat, puss-like blister like things on her tonsils and just miserable. They thought strep even though rapid strep was NEGATIVE. They put her on Omnicef. The 5 day strep test came back NEGATIVE too. 7 days after being on antibiotic, she broke out in a rash. Sore throat gone. But the rash comes and goes and travels from her mid section to her buttocks, thighs, sometimes hands/feet/arms. Hand, Foot, Mouth has been ruled out. Went to campus doctor several times - got a shot of prednisone 5 days ago and it worked for a day or two, then started to come back. It is two weeks in and she is still getting breakouts that come and go. Do you think she had some weird virus or could something be really wrong? Had bloodwork done and it looks normal. She went to Urgent Care and they gave her a 6 day course of prednisone. Any thoughts?? Signed, Worried Mom who can t be there for her girl at school!!

Hello
As all symptoms mentioned by you is an indication of allergic bronchitis with throat infection .
I want to tell you that these symptoms may be due to these possibilities , these include:
1 Asthmatic allergic bronchitis , due to some allergen she got rashes all over body with infection in throat . Predisposing factors may be dust, mite , pollen , mold , smoking ( active & passive ) , sudden change in temperature ( increase or decrease in temperature ) pests .
2 Septic pharyngitis , as this is most common cause of throat infection.
3 Acute allergic or non-allergic rhinitis .
Prednisolone only provide some relief because it act as an anti inflammatory drugs and also act as anti allergen but this is a symptomatic treatment not a curative treatment .
When such case visit my clinic I prescribe them to take montelukast+ bambuterol ( if breathlessness accompanying ), if no breathlessness to take montelukast+fexofenadine according to necessity.
Levofloxacin 10 mg / kg body weight orally ,once in day for 5-7 days .
Dextromethophan tablet as chew able for local throat infection( longeze ).
Hot saline or anti septic solution gargles also help .
The rashes over body is also due to allergy .
Since this is a prescription treatment so please consult a physician and get his prescription.
Also give her ivermwectine 12 mg one tablet +albendazole 400 mg one tablet for worm infestation as some times beside allergy , worms also produces such rashes.
Hope this will be useful for your daughter.
Good luck.
