Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Omeprazole Advisable While Having Osteoporosis?
I read recently that if one has osteoporis or osteopaenia they should not take omeprazole after three years time. I have the latter condition but my doctor prescribed omeprazole about 7 years ago after an endoscopy showed I have a strong case of acid in my stomach. I had to take 40 mg daily for a month and then 20 mg once a day. I asked the Dr s colleague about 2 years ago if I could go on taking omeprazole only twice a week since I see that folks who take the drug over the counter are told to stop after several weeks for about three months. I am poor on symptoms of acid reflux, but I have been diagnosed with the condition. I need to clear my throat often--on some days. Thank you for your advice.
Though your condition of osteoporosis has a definite effect on taking PPIs as evident by some recent studies but it is not an established fact that PPIs have an effect in decreasing bone density in humans. There have been some exiperiments favouring this view in animals with minimal effect in humans as per the study. To limit taking any drug if not life saving is a good habit, so if you are good without taking omperazole you can take alternates in form of Herbal substitutes to eliminate the chances of bone fractures if there are any with PPIs.
I can help in this regard but need to know all aspects of your medical history.
Hope that Helps Thanks
