General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

In urinary tract infection use of older drugs like nitrofurantoin depends upon development of resistance of bacteria to it in your region.
So if you are in the region where sensitivity is still there then it can be used.
Blood in urine must be investigated thoroughly, so consult surgeon as early as possible.
Other advise for UTI - drink plenty of water through out day

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards
Dr. Hiren
