Is IVIG The Right Treatment For PANDAS In A 6 Year Old?

My grandson is 6 years old as of March 2017. He has been diagnosed with Pandas. The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who works under the specialist here in Washington, DC has recommended this as the next dtep as he has seen some improvement in symptoms such as no longer wakes with nightmares and doesn t wet himself anymore....but he still has anger outbursts and a tic. My son-in-law is fearful of the bad reactions that IVIG might bring on. We had only heard of Hep C and Aids, however a local pediatrician who checked our grandson s swimmer s ear scared son-in-law to the point they might not do IVIG. Hydration helps symptoms....but other problems....we as grandparents thought it was a risk worth taking until pediatrition scared my son-in-law so badly. Your thoughts on the topic, please.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice

I wish I knew what the local pediatrician told your son-in-law. How long has your grandchild been affected by PANDAS? IVIG is considered to be used for severely ill children with PANDAS. Treatment with IVIG improves mental functioning, depression, emotional ups and downs, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms as well as others. Side-effects of IVIG: nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness. With all due respect, I assume that the specialist in charge of your grandson's care has more experience taking care of children with this diagnosis. I suggest you ask for the specialist's opinion while you and your son-in-law are in the same room so that both of you hear what the specialist says and you are both there to ask questions of the specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
