Hi,

Reason for switching the medication not mentioned. Both Cipralex and Paxil CRF are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors commonly prescribed for social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Both are equally effective in patients with social anxiety but Cipralex has fewer side effects.

Generally switching involves a washout period of 2-5 days between cessation of previous drug like Cipralex and the introduction of a new drug like Paxil to prevent drug interactions. After this wash out period it usually takes 2 to 6 weeks for a new drug like Paxil-CRF to start reducing the anxiety.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
