Is Cefuroxime Effective In Treating Flu?

I have never been prescribed cefuroxime before. my doctor prescribed 500 mg tabs (1 x daily). I am in excellent health and seldom go to the doctor. The recent visit was for pain radiating across my back. I thought I might have the beginnings of the flu. My doctor is excellent. From reading I understand the cefuroxime is not for the flu. I have no viruses and no infections of any kind.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It's not effective in treating flu. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is commonly prescribed to treat susceptible bacterial infections such as pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections. It's not effective against viral infections such as flu or influenza. Based on the history you seem to be suffering from myalgia or neuritis for which you need to be examined by a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
