Is Cefuroxime Advisable After Taking Amoxicillin?

I had two knee replacements recently. My doctor prescribed Amoxicillin prior to teeth cleanings. I was prescribed to take Cefuroxime for a sinus infection for 10 days, but I will be going to the dentist in four days. Will it be OK to just take the Cefuroxime?

Hi.
Thanks for the query..

Antibiotics are advised for just 2-3 days prior to dental cleaning or other dental treatments in individuals who have recently undergone any surgical procedure or at a higher risk of infection..

Amoxicillin is a commonly advised antibiotic but in case if you are already taking Cefuroxime then you can continue with the same and you need not to take any other antibiotic..

You should also do antiseptic mouthwash rinses and warm saline gargles before and after the scaling procedure..

Do not worry as Scaling will not generally cause severe infections if you do not have any associated medical problems, so you can continue Cefuroxime and go for scaling..

Hope this helps.

Regards.
