Is Amoxil Safe For A G6PD Deficiency Patient?

Hello!

I am 35 year old male with G6PD deficiency! I was recently involved in a minor bike accident and got a wound which is now slightly infected! I visited clinic and the doctor prescribed me Amoxil dosage for a week!

I forgot to mention during my visit that I was G6PD patient! Can anyone inform me if Amoxil safe to take for patients with G6PD patients!

Thank you!

Thanks for contacting with your health concern and following are the clarifications:

1. amoxil [Amoxycillin] is the penicillin class of antibiotics used in biliary/urinary and H.Pylori infections and although it is very safe to use the same in G6PD deficient patients but you should consult with your attending doctor regarding the same since it can cause hypersensitive reactions [as adverse affect] which can also be hemolytic anemia [if one is G6PD deficient]

2. One should mainly avoid anti malarials, sulfonamides, anti bacterials [nitrofurantoin, nalidixic acid, dapsone] while drugs like pyrimethamine, chloramphenicol, isoniazid, colchicine, vitamin C, probenecid are safe

2.
