Is Amoxicillin The Right Medicine For Ear Infection?
I am allergic to penicillin (anaphylaxsis) and my son is also. My granddaughter has a double ear infection which she cannot shake and has taken amoxicillin and Zpak but is still spiking 100+ temps. Are these drugs in the penicillin family and could she be allergic to them?
** Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern
1. Amoxycillin is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections and is the first line treatment of middle ear infection and yes amoxycillin do belong to penicillin group [B lactam group], thus consult your attending physician regarding any allergic response of the drug [since you are allergic to penicillin] and this products contains inactive ingredients which can cause allergic problems in her too
2. Tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides [azithromycinc [Z pak], aminoglycosides and glycopeptides are all unrelated to penicillins and are safe to use in the penicillin allergic patient, so your doctor may combine Z pak with any of the antibiotic group cited above.
