Is Abilify Effective In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder?

I am taking Ambilify for MDD (Anxiety, depression, panic attacks) 5 mg. tablet at 4:00 pm everyday. I take 40 mg. of Prozac once in morning. I have just recently (last 2 weeks) started taking the Ambilify (Aripipazole()--not sure on the Ambilfy . Been taking Prozac for at least 20 years. Do you have any suggestions on the Ambilify? Also, I take 7.5 mg. of Remeron ( Mirtazapine) for sleep---too strong---wondering if you have any suggestions on sleep meds. I was raped 18+ yrs. ago and I have major depression so this why I was put on these drugs by a Phychristrist . Thank you, Brenda Bishop YYYY@YYYY

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Fluoxetine and mirtazapine are considered good medicines for depression and anxiety disorder. Abilify or Aripiprazole will not help if it is given only for depression and anxiety. It is an antipsychotic medication which is given for psychosis.

So, if you are experiencing psychotic symptoms, then it can be given otherwise. I don’t see any reason here to start it. You can get opinion from your psychiatrist on this. And if Mirtazapine is giving more sedation, then you can take short-acting benzodiazepines like Lorazepam for sleep.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
