Would Cefdinir Be A Safe Choice To Treat UTI?

I haven t had a UTI in 10+ years til now. I went to an urgent care and they prescribed cefdinir. But I m reading it has Beck effects on the gastrointestinal and I have gastrointestinal issues associated with Ehlers Danlos and POTS. Would this be a safe choice or should I get them to change it to something else?

Hello,

You are suffering from UTI. You are suggested to take care of your hygiene and do not use public toilets and washrooms. Take adequate water, fluids, soups and juice to flush out the toxins. Stay away from addictions if any.

You are suggested to get urinalysis done (R/E and C/S), you should take the medicines after the report comes. The medicines indicated in the reports will be specific, hence it will work better. The commonest medicines prescribed for UTI are Trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra).

In case you are sulfa medicine sensitive then you are prescribed other medicines like Amoxicillin/potassium clavulanate (Augmentin), cefdinir (Omnicef), or cephalexin (Keflex), etc. If you experience any side effects due to medicine, you can report to the treating doctor. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
