Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had an ultrasound on a painless neck lump done in april that had been swollen for a couple of months. it was firrm and fixed. the ultrasound showed "a hypoechoic luymph node measuing 11x12x4mm" the ultrasound clearly stated "the palpable nodule does represent a lymph node". i went to an ENT who scheduled surgery to have it removed. he kept referring to it though as a "Postauricular lesion". i told him about the ultrasound showing a lymph node and sent him the ultrasound. after surgery, the ENT tells me it was a benign lipoma. whew! 2 months post op, i go in for a follow-up appointment and to mention that i still feel a lump and some sensations in the area. the ENT says its all good. i ask for a report from the surgery and pathology. it showes on gross dissection the "lesion" as "unremarkable adipose tissue" but makes no mention of the lymph node. i asked the ENT whether he removed it or not. he said he didn't. i am awaiting an explanation as to why he didn't remove the lymph node for biopsy. is there a reason that a surgeon would see it and leave it in? or could it be taht the ultrasound was wrong, even though it was very specific. i am quite confused and worried that the ENT ought to have taken out the node for biopsy.
does this happen often?
