I Am A 19 Year Old Female And Just Finished

I am a 19 year old female and just finished my first cycle of birth control pills (I am on the 1st day for the withdrawal bleeding). I was placed on the pill, because I did not have my period for five months and they were hoping this would "reset" my normal cycle. However, I just took my tampon out and noticed a very thick, red tissue that came with the tampon. It wasn't a blood clot like I normally experience on my heavier days with a normal menstrual bleed, but I can only describe it as some sort of tissue. I'm not sure if this is normal because it isn't anything like I've seen before. Is it normal uterine tissue shedding, or something more serious? Could this possibly have been the thing that was restricting me from having a period in the months before and this is my body's way of purging it?
