How To Treat Sore Throat And Dry Coughing?

I have a sore throat and lots of coughing, sometimes dry cough and sometimes productive cough and no fever. My pcp told me in the past it was post nasal drip. I take my allergy meds as directed. After almost weeks of this with no relief and a trip to urgent care, I am ready for another opinion.

Hello dear,

Presence of cough with sore throat & post nasal drip can be due to irritation of the respiratory tract due to hyper responsiveness to any allergen.

Under such circumstances, management usually involves:
1. Steam inhalation & anti tussive preparations for providing soothing effect & reduce the irritation in the respiratory tract.
2. Antihistamine preparations like Allegra can be taken for symptomatic relief.
3. Montelukast, which is used as a maintenance therapy to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies.
4. A course of antibiotics to tackle secondary infections.
5. Maintain adequate hydration & take a healthy balance diet.
6. Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.

Wishing a good health.
Take care.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of sore throat and dry coughing which is due to post nasal discharge. You will probably need a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and oral antiseptic rinses if it is just an infection. If there is an abscess somewhere in your throat then that may be drained through a small procedure.

Antihistaminic levocetirizine + Montelukast combination is preferred in case of post nasal drip. Bronchodilator, mucolytic, proton pump inhibitor is another choice of combination for your condition. I would suggest you to visit ENT once and get it examined properly and start treatment as per your diagnosis.

Do warm saline gargles on daily basis along with betadine gargles.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
