How To Treat Sore And Swollen Throat?

My 17 year old daughter has a sore throat -- feels like something is stuck in it and swollen. Took her to the doctor last week and they gave her 5 days of prednisone. Guessing it was allergy or acid she finished the pred Tuesday. Throat is still sore, sore to swallow and her throat, tongue and cheeks are swollen. She woke up last night being sore. Today we tried some Peptobismol to see if that would sooth her throat. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Welcome to HCM. I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

With the symptoms you describe and the way they progressed, it seems like your daughter might have an bacterial throat infection. Does she have also high fever? Have you noticed any white spots on her tonsils? I dont know why she took prednisone, but for sure the doctor that visited her had a good indication for that.

Peptobismol is not effective. Since it is for acid reflux.

I recommend to visit an ENT doctor to exlude peritonsilar abscess (acummulated puss) and to value the condition more objectively.

If the bacterial infection is confirmed, I recommend amoxicilin or amoxiclav antibiotic, paracetamol for pain and/or fever and betadine oral solution for mouthwash (gargling).

Wishing you a good health. Best regards
