How To Treat Severe Pain In The Back And The Leg?

I had back surgery in 2009 on my L3 L4 for a herniated disk. I am now experiencing the same pain again only slightly lower. I have had an MRI and xrays, done PT, gone to a Chiropractor and most recently was put on a 2 week dosage of Prednisone. The pain in the back is tolerable but not the severe pain down the whole right leg. It takes my breath away. It is at it s worse as soon as I get up in the morning and again in the evening. I have a prescription for hydrocodone but do not like taking this for any length of time. This has been going on for almost a year now and is getting worse. I have been taking steroids for many years (approx 20 mg per day) for Addisons Disease. I also have the start of Osteprosis (sp?). Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Your MRI will give me a clue about what has to be done. If there is recurrence of same problem or disc bulge at other level or pain due to facet arthropathy, do consult a pain physician for some interventional treatment like nucleoplasty, annuloplasty, Radiofrequency ablation etc . It is nonsurgical, day care and cost effective procedures. As you need to take steroids for addisons, osteoporosis is their side effect. You can prevent it by using calcium, Vit D3 along with bisphosphoates like ibendronate. Meet your pain physician for detailed advice and treatment
