Hello,

You have swelling and irritation in your mastoid area. Commonly middle ear infection can cause such symptoms. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT, if otitis media is detected it should be treated. Neglect may cause mastoiditis to develop. Otitis media is treated with a course of antibiotics (Augmentin) and analgesics (Acetaminophen).

Sometimes, a growing collection of skin cells called a cholesteatoma, may block drainage of the ear, leading to mastoiditis. Get ears checked, your ENT may consider ear wash (done in the clinic) to remove wax. It is first treated with ear drops. Get it treated. If left neglected it may lead to mastoiditis that develops as a result of a middle ear infection.

Since you have a history of getting recurrent swelling, irritability and discomfort, you should get it treated to avid complications like nausea, vomiting, vertigo, headache, vision changes, hearing loss, etc. Avoid getting into swimming pools and when you take shower or bath, make sure that water does not enter your ears.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
