Hi,

Brief answer: In my opinion, your symptoms are consistent with an arrhythmia (abnormal heart beat rhythm). You should be evaluated by your doctor to determine the type of arrhythmia and the cause.

Detailed answer: Electrical impulses cause the heart muscle to contract and pump blood. Electricity is conducted in a specific sequence and along a specific path within the heart to achieve effective pumping of blood and a normal heart rate and rhythm. Disruptions of this electrical impulse can lead to abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) and poor pumping of blood. This disruption in electrical impulses can be caused by abnormalities in the electrical wiring of the heart itself or caused by body hormones and medications that affect how electricity conducts in the heart.

Arrhythmias can be continuous or occur randomly and resolve within seconds to minutes. Some arrhythmias may not cause symptoms and won’t need medical treatment, while others may cause symptoms including palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and fainting. Arrhythmias can also lead to sudden death.

I suggest that you talk with your doctor about your symptoms so that you can be appropriately evaluated. Evaluation is likely to include blood tests to check your electrolytes and thyroid, EKG, echocardiogram, and heart rhythm monitoring. In the meantime, I would advise you to avoid consuming caffeine and alcohol.

Hope this helps answer your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,

Dr. Aaron Shapiro
