Hello,

If you have discomfort or pain you should limit your mobility. Since the lump is swollen get it clinically examined in the ER. Your treating doctor will aspirate it if the swelling is due to the cyst. He may need you to get a biopsy and blood tests done if surgical removal is needed. If it is an abscess, the doctor will drain and clean it. Antiseptic dressing will be done. You will be given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory for relief.

Neglected ankle lumps may cause complications like abscess, spread of infection to the blood stream, loss of mobility, tumors, cysts, gout, RA, OA, etc. Do not neglect, get treated. In the meantime to ease discomfort you can take Naproxen or Combiflam, one SOS when needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
