How To Treat A Possible Fracture In Tailbone Causing Pain While Standing And Walking?

I fracutered my tailbone about 4 years ago. I still suffer from coccyxdena. Today I was drug to the ground by my 120 dog. I think i fracture it again. It hurts bad, sitting, standing, walking getting up and bending over. Also it feels cold and wet right in the area. Could this be fractured again or just badly bruised. She I see medical attention.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from tailbone pain while standing and walking. You have history of fracturing tailbone 4 years ago. You hurt it again. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an Orthopedics. Get repeat X-ray, CT or MRI scan, bone scan, etc. In the meantime, you can take NSAID like ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling.

Decreasing sitting time may help relieve pain. Lean forward if you have to sit. Taking a hot bath will help to relax muscles and ease pain. Use a “donut” pillow when sitting. Your treatment will depend on the pathology or degree of fracture detected. Your treating doctor will treat you with coccygeal nerve block, massage therapy, physical therapy for stretching exercises and posture improvement guided by a physical therapist.

Acupuncture or TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) will be given if required. Surgery is recommended only when there is no proper response to the treatment given. Recovery time from a coccygectomy (partial or total) can take a few months but sometimes years. The response varies from patient to patient.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
